The Karnataka Transport Department is set to introduce an AI-based Smart Enforcement System to monitor road safety and penalize traffic violations. This new system will cover 60 high-risk locations identified through data from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Karnataka's accident records. Districts like Davangere, Dharwad, Kalaburagi, Belagavi, and Dakshina Kannada are included. The department called a tender for the project on December 8. A senior official stated, “Monitoring the operation of commercial vehicles is a key responsibility of the department. We are upgrading enforcement infrastructure and taking steps to book offenders under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the rules made there under.” The smart cameras will automatically detect violations and issue digital challans to offenders via their registered email and phone numbers. Each alert will link to photographic or video proof and payment instructions. This Smart Enforcement Project also includes an intelligent command centre using a strong ICT-enabled WAN network. It will unify operations on a single platform with AI-enabled cameras and digital payments. All live data from cameras will be sent to a central State Control Room for analysis and quick action. An official explained, “We hope that this transparent, technology-driven process will not only streamline enforcement but also minimise disputes, reduce manual intervention, and ensure faster resolution of cases.” The system is designed for future expansion. Possible upgrades include smart parking detection, integration with traffic management, police coordination, and links with emergency services and e-courts. Advanced video analytics will also be supported. The new AI-driven initiative aims to raise compliance and reduce road accidents in the state.
