PU Students to Gherao BJP Offices, Demand Senate Poll Dates with Farmer Support
November 27, 2025
Get ready for a storm of student energy! On November 26, 2025, Panjab University (PU) students announced a fierce plan — they will gherao the BJP offices in Punjab and Chandigarh on December 3. Why? They want the much-awaited schedule for the PU senate elections out NOW! The students, riding high on support from farmers, religious groups, and other student bodies, are not backing down. "The protest will continue until our demand is met," they said boldly.
Here’s the sizzling background: Despite Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu’s promise that the senate poll date would come soon, no official announcement has arrived yet. This has left students fuming after months of waiting.
To crank up the pressure, the Panjab University Bachao Morcha called for a complete varsity shutdown on the day of the announcement. The protest took place near the vice chancellor’s office, with security forces bringing in anti-riot vehicles to keep things calm. The varsity declared a holiday on November 26 and even postponed exams to avoid clashes.
Things heated up earlier on November 10, when students marched in large numbers, even storming the varsity's gates and clashing briefly with security. The agitation began after a controversial Centre decision to change the composition of PU's senate and syndicate.
But guess what? The Centre backed off! The Ministry of Education withdrew its October 28 notification on November 7 after pressure from students and political leaders. Yet, the students held firm, demanding not just a rollback but an election schedule.
PU’s vice chancellor told students the election schedule is now awaiting the approval of the Vice President of India, who also serves as the chancellor of Panjab University. Meanwhile, the political heat is rising. Punjab’s major parties including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Shiromani Akali Dal, and Congress are cheering the students on.
Not just politicians, farmers’ groups like the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), SKM (Non-Political), and Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Morcha are also standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the students. Looks like the battle for fairness in PU’s governance is gathering unstoppable steam!
Stay tuned as December 3 approaches — the countdown to the gherao is on, and Panjab University’s students are ready to shake the corridors of power like never before!
