Shock in Koppal: Teen Girl Gives Birth in Hostel Washroom, KSCPCR Acts on Staff Negligence
November 27, 2025
A jaw-dropping incident has come to light from Koppal district where a 16-year-old girl gave birth to a baby boy in the washroom of her girls' hostel! The place? Sri D. Devaraj Urs Pre-Matric Girls Hostel. The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) didn’t waste a moment and registered a suo motu complaint upon hearing the news from media reports.
The head of the Commission, Shashidhar S. Kosambe, swiftly wrote letters to the Koppal district collector and Superintendent of Police, demanding urgent details. He has asked the officials to provide information about the steps taken by them within just three days! Talk about quick justice moves.
The shocking part? The Kukanoor Police filed a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, against a 23-year-old man. This man allegedly had a romantic relationship with the girl, promising marriage, but things turned tragic. But wait, there’s more – six other people connected to the hostel, including staff, teachers, and health workers, have been booked for their alleged negligence! The Commission’s letter blasted the hostel staff for 'glaring negligence', highlighting huge lapses in care.
To quote the Commission's letter, “Based on all these factors and in the interest of the girls in the hostel, a suo motu complaint has been registered with the commission.”
Thankfully, after the incident on November 26, both the young mother and her newborn son were rushed to the district hospital. The good news? Both are said to be healthy and are currently receiving treatment.
This dramatic episode throws a spotlight on safety and supervision in institutional hostels. Can the authorities now pump up the care and watchfulness to keep our children safe? The clock is ticking as the district administration gears up to respond to KSCPCR's urgent inquiry.
