CAG Launches Two Power-Packed Audit Cadres to Sharpen Govt Finance Checks from 2026
November 7, 2025
New Delhi is buzzing with big news from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG)! On Thursday, CAG announced a game-changing plan to boost the quality and expertise of government audits. How? By creating not one, but TWO special centralised cadres within the Indian Audit and Accounts Department. Meet the Central Revenue Audit (CRA) Cadre and the Central Expenditure Audit (CEA) Cadre, approved in principle and set to launch from January 1, 2026.
Right now, dozens of offices across states handle audits of government income and spending with many fragmented teams. But CAG’s new plan will bring all these scattered audit warriors—over 4,000 senior and assistant officers—under just two focused umbrellas! K Subramaniam, DAI (HR, IR, CDN), revealed this at a media briefing in New Delhi.
So why the big change? The CRA Cadre will become masters at checking government money coming in, while the CEA Cadre will specialize in scrutinizing every rupee spent. This specialization means sharper skills, smarter audits, and clearer reports to keep government finances squeaky clean.
Subramaniam explained the perks: fewer bosses (from 16 to 1 for CRA and 19 to 1 for CEA), smoother transfers, and better chances for officers to work closer to home. "Everybody would have 2-3 opportunities in life to be closer home or in a place which is proximate," he assured. This transparent rotation system sounds like a win-win for officials and the organisation.
Adding more spice, special separate SAS (Senior Audit Service) exam streams will test officers for their respective teams, ensuring only the best get in. A new transfer and posting board will manage postings carefully, balancing career growth and the department’s needs.
In short, CAG is cooking up a powerful audit recipe with these two new cadres to turn up the heat on government finance checks from 2026 onwards. Faster, focused, and fairer audits are all set to bring a bigger bang for taxpayers’ bucks!
