The Eternal Rain of Mercy: How Kallazhagar and Ramanuja Bless Devotees Forever

Have you ever wondered about the deep meaning behind the phrase "varu mazhai" or "the rain that comes in"? This beautiful expression appears in Nammazhvar’s Thiruvaimozhi and was vividly explained by Akkarakkani Srinidhi. But what is this special rain that visits Maaliruncholai? According to the wise commentary by Nampillai, Maaliruncholai hosts two kinds of rain! First, there is Kallazhagar, the gracious Lord of the kshetra, who is like a cloud that never leaves. He is the forever rain cloud, always showering blessings without ever moving away. Then, there are the usual clouds we know — they come, pour rain, and go. The story gets even more enchanting when we hear about Lord Rama’s special love for Sabari, a brave hunter’s clan member. Similarly, when the great teacher Ramanuja was in danger from his mentor Yadavaprakasa, something magical happened. Lord Varadaraja of Kanchi and His Consort Perundevi disguised themselves as hunters to protect Ramanuja. They left him safe near a well, where Ramanuja drank water daily before going to the Varadaraja temple. This divine act showered blessings on Ramanuja and, through him, the whole world received a great Acharya! Just like Kallazhagar who is the never-leaving cloud of Thirumaliruncholai, Varadaraja and Perundevi remain eternal clouds over Kanchi, blessing their followers endlessly. Ramanujacharya lived by the same motto of kindness. His mercy lit up the hearts of many, earning high praise from Thiruvarangathamudanar. In the beautiful hymn Ramanuja Nootrandadi, he calls Ramanuja "kaarei karunai Ramanuja" — meaning Ramanuja is like rain-clouds full of mercy. Just as clouds give rain without asking anything back, Ramanuja gave his knowledge generously, always focused on the welfare of all. Isn’t it wonderful to see how these divine rains symbolize endless love, protection, and knowledge? This rain isn’t just water; it’s pure mercy, forever pouring on us all!
