A watery challenge is on the way for Odisha as a cyclonic storm is brewing in the Bay of Bengal! From October 27, the state is expected to see heavy rainfall and strong winds, stirring streets and rivers alike. But don’t panic just yet—Odisha’s disaster management teams are alert and ready. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari gave a strong message: "Odisha is highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as heavy rainfall, flooding, river swelling, and cyclones. We are preparing for an impending cyclonic storm predicted to hit its coast on the 22 or 29. Departments, including Health, Water Resources, Energy, and Agriculture, are fully prepared. Local Administrations across Odisha, especially in vulnerable areas, have made arrangements for relief centres, evacuation, and the provision of essential supplies. We urge people not to panic as we are fully prepared." His words bring calm and confidence amid the stormy news. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area formed over southeast Bay of Bengal on October 24. This system will grow quickly: a depression by October 25, a deep depression by October 26, and then a cyclonic storm by October 27. IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty confirmed this rapid change, saying: "There is a low-pressure system formed south of the Bay of Bengal... It is likely to form into a depression over the southeast and the adjoining Bay of Bengal on October 25. It will also further intensify into a deep depression by October 26. And into a cyclonic storm by October 27. Odisha is likely to experience heavy rainfall activity on 27, 28 and 29 October. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea from 26th onwards..." What does this mean for Odisha’s coastal and southern districts? Buckle up for heavy rains and squally weather starting October 27. Winds might swirl at 40-50 kmph and gust up to 60 kmph, making the sea rough and risky for fishermen. Following the warning, fishing activities in nearby Thoothukudi have been suspended. Officials have urged fishermen to stay safe on shore and boats at sea must return immediately. Those on the docks shouldn’t set sail until the all-clear. Residents living by the sea are also advised to avoid the shoreline while keeping a close eye on IMD’s updates. With preparation in full swing, Odisha hopes to beat the storm with safety and calm. Stay alert, stay safe, and watch the skies as Odisha braces for this watery visitor from the Bay of Bengal!
