Jim Taiclet, CEO of Lockheed Martin, shared exciting details about their work on space-based interceptors and other secret projects linked to the Golden Dome initiative. Taiclet said, “We also submitted proposals for space-based interceptors and other emerging technologies.” He confirmed the company is aiming for a “real on-orbit, space-based interceptor demonstration by 2028.” But that’s not all! Lockheed Martin is changing its game in Research and Development (R&D). Taiclet explained, “The previous way that the company tended to aggregate and fund IR&D was, each of the business units would get sort of a slice of the pie, so to speak, and figure out what were the most important projects for their current or prospective pursuits.” Now, they are focusing R&D in a smarter, sharper way. A cool innovation hotspot is Lockheed’s Center for Innovation in Virginia. It’s their prototyping hub where they team up with industry partners to create a top-notch Golden Dome command and control system. The Golden Dome initiative was first announced by former President Donald Trump as a way to boost US homeland security. It’s a secretive, giant program combining many technologies to stop missiles in space or atmosphere before they reach US soil. Space-based interceptors are absolutely key here, doing their job far from the homeland — “in [the] boost phase,” as US Space Force Gen. Chance Saltzman puts it. He said, “We want them to achieve their effects as far from the homeland. So they’ve got to be fast, they’ve got to be accurate.” What’s a space-based interceptor? It’s a missile defense missile that can spot and smash incoming ballistic or hypersonic missiles early — either when they’re zooming upward or flying mid-route.
