Hold on tight, aviation fans! Air India is packing a powerful punch in the skies with plans to snatch up between 80 and 100 additional widebody aircraft. That’s up to 70 more than what was whispered earlier! Reuters sources spill the beans: the airline wants these planes from Airbus or Boeing. Earlier chatter talked about just 25-30 widebody planes, but now it’s a feast of nearly 300 aircraft including a steady stream of 200 narrowbodies. Air India, owned by the Tata Group since 2023, is on a mega fleet makeover journey. The airline already placed solid orders for a whopping 470 planes – 250 from Airbus and 220 from Boeing. To add more spice, it threw in ten more A350 and A320neo jets late 2024. Currently, 514 planes are still on their way to the airline, including various models like 90 A320-200Ns, 210 A321-200NXs, and a tasty mix of 25 A350-1000s and 19 A350-900s. But what about the planes actually flying now? Data from ch-aviation shows Air India operates a diverse fleet from tiny A319-100s to powerful B777-300ERs and modern B787 Dreamliners. Plus, its budget arm, Air India Express, zips with a fleet of 22 A320-200s and 50 B737-8s among others. When asked, Air India kept mum on the new plans, but the numbers tell a clear story – India’s national airline is gearing up for a dazzling future in the sky. With bold moves and mega orders, it’s a thrilling new chapter for Air India, promising passengers more choices, better service, and a super-modern fleet to take on the world!
