Donald Trump's approval rating has taken a sharp dive, now standing at just 40%, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. The big issue? Most Americans are not happy about sending the National Guard or federal troops into US cities without the go-ahead from state governors. Only 38% of people believe the president should send troops even if governors disagree. Meanwhile, 48% say the president should not send troops without the governor’s thumbs-up. Trump is arguing that federal troops are needed to fight rising crime in big Democratic-run cities like Portland and Chicago. He called Portland “war-ravaged” and described Chicago as a “hellhole.” Trump even threatened to use the Insurrection Act, a powerful law that lets the president deploy troops inside the US, after courts blocked his plans to send the National Guard to Illinois and Oregon. Trump claims the troops are crucial to protect ICE agents while they arrest people. Despite courts getting in the way, troops have already been sent to Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. This move sparked a fiery clash with California’s Governor Gavin Newsom, who called Trump’s deployment a costly mistake that cost taxpayers $120 million. The tension isn’t cooling down. Governors like Illinois’ J.B. Pritzker fired back, accusing Trump of using soldiers as “political props and pawns” to militarize cities illegally. Pritzker also slammed Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, saying she’s trying to “consolidate Trump’s power.” Pritzker said, “That plan will only work if we let it. The state of Illinois is going to use every lever at its disposal and get Noem’s thugs the hell out of Chicago,” as reported by The Independent. Trump keeps pushing a Rasmussen poll that shows 57% approve of his work. But newer results from Rasmussen tell a different story: only 47% approve, while 51% disapprove. In fact, 42% strongly disapprove of Trump’s performance. His overall net approval rating remains a negative 10, painting a tricky picture for the president. To sum it up, Americans are split, and many governors are standing firm against Trump’s troop deployments. Will this political showdown heat up or cool down? Only time will tell.
