Russia shocked Ukraine with a massive overnight attack using missiles and drones. At least five people lost their lives, with four family members tragically killed when their home was destroyed in Lviv. This western region, near Poland, faced its biggest attack since the war began. Mayor Andriy Sadovyi of Lviv urged people to stay indoors as fires blazed and parts of the city lost power. The attack involved a staggering 140 drones and 23 missiles, said Lviv’s governor Maksym Kozytskyi, making it the largest assault on the city during this conflict. Rescue teams worked hard to find survivors amid the rubble where the family’s building once stood, now reduced to its very foundation. Nearby, 10 homes were completely ruined. Meanwhile, in southeastern Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia, one person died and ten others got hurt. Over 73,000 people were left without electricity, but by afternoon, power returned to 20,000 homes, said governor Ivan Fedorov. Damage also spread to regions like Ivano-Frankivsk, Vinnytsia, Chernihiv, Kherson, Kharkiv, and Odesa. Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko called the attack "another deliberate act of terror against civilians" and slammed Moscow for targeting homes, schools, and energy facilities. Energy infrastructure was a major target. Ukraine’s energy ministry confirmed damage in Zaporizhzhia and Chernihiv. The state gas company Naftogaz reported strikes on gas infrastructure but kept details secret. Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed their strikes hit Ukrainian military-industrial sites and energy facilities overnight. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy revealed that Russian forces fired over 50 missiles and nearly 500 drones in this massive campaign. On the other side, NATO country Poland reacted quickly, scrambling jets early Sunday to protect its skies. Poland’s military announced that both Polish and allied aircraft were patrolling, and ground defenses were on high alert. This comes after Russia’s drones crossed Polish airspace before, causing alarm in Europe. Even Lithuania’s airport in Vilnius shut down for some hours due to reports of mysterious balloons nearby. The war continues to send shockwaves across the region as Russia steps up efforts to damage Ukraine’s energy and scare civilians, while neighbors stay vigilant for any spillover of conflict.
