Poland Scrambles Jets as Russian Missiles and Drones Rain Near Lviv, NATO on High Alert

October 6, 2025

Hold onto your seats! Early on Sunday, Poland, a proud NATO member, quickly scrambled its aircraft to protect its skies after Russia launched fierce airstrikes on Ukraine. Ukrainian officials reported missiles and drones pouring down on the Lviv region, just a stone’s throw from Poland. Poland’s operational command posted on X, “Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness.” This isn’t just a local flare-up. NATO’s eastern-flank countries are now on red alert. Why? Because Poland had to shoot down suspected Russian drones in its own airspace just last September! Plus, strange drone sightings and airspace intrusions near cities like Copenhagen and Munich have stirred chaos in European skies. In a twist, Lithuania’s Vilnius airport shut down for several hours overnight after reports of mysterious balloons heading straight for it. Flight tracking service Flightradar24 showed commercial flights early Sunday taking unusual detours around Poland’s Lublin and Rzeszow airports, near Ukraine’s border. Reuters could not confirm this independently, and there were no alerts on the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s site about this. However, Eurocontrol, the big boss of European air traffic control, warned: expect major delays in Polish-controlled airspace because of the "Ukraine situation." The tension was thick in Ukraine too. At 0300 GMT, Ukraine’s Air Force rang the alarm, saying all parts of the country faced fresh Russian missile threats. Ukrainian cities weren’t safe either. Andriy Sadovyi, the mayor of Lviv, around 70 km from Poland, shared tense news: missiles were flying toward the city after fierce battles by air defence against Russian drones. Reuters reporters heard booming air defence shots coming from every direction! Luckily, no damage was reported so far, and Russia stayed silent on the matter. This missile madness is part of the brutal war games both Russia and Ukraine play. They repeatedly bomb energy and transport spots, trying to crush each other’s war efforts. Stay tuned—this fiery saga is far from over!
