Delhi Gets Ready for Rain and Big Temperature Drop, October Turns Wettest in Years!

October 6, 2025

Delhi’s skies are set to open again as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts light to moderate rain on Monday and Tuesday across Delhi and NCR. What’s more exciting? A fresh western disturbance is moving in from northwest India, promising a sharp drop in temperatures and breezy, cool days ahead. The IMD has placed both days under a yellow alert, telling everyone to stay ready for sporadic showers and cooler weather. On Sunday, the mercury touched 34.1°C, but brace yourself! Monday’s maximum temperature will fall steeply to around 28°C - one of the sharpest dips we have seen this season. Even the night will get cooler, with minimum temperatures expected to hit nearly 20°C by Wednesday, thanks to chilly northwesterly winds sweeping into the region. And here’s a spicy fact about this October: it’s raining cats and dogs! Safdarjung, Delhi’s main weather station, reports that the city has already seen 51.8 mm of rainfall in just the first five days of October. That is more than THREE times the usual 15.1 mm average. Last year at this time? Zero measurable rain. This downpour could push October’s total close to 100 mm, making it one of the wettest Octobers in recent memory. This unusual rainy celebration is built on a strong base - 2023 has been a year of heavy rains almost every month. May was Mumbai and Delhi’s wettest on record with 186.4 mm. June had 45% extra rain, while July and August both surpassed average rainfall by big margins. September didn’t stay behind, too, finishing a bit above normal. What’s the bonus? The rain is set to bring relief to Delhi’s air quality. The PM2.5 pollution level on Saturday was 65 µg/m³ - just a bit above India’s safe limit of 60 µg/m³, and way lower than the usual 200+ levels Delhi faces by late October. So, rain will wash away the nasty pollutants, at least for a while. However, the humidity will be a little stubborn. It swung between 63% and 100% over the weekend and will stay high during the rainy spell before falling later in the week. Delhiites should carry umbrellas and light jackets because mornings might get chilly by midweek. Winter is slowly but surely knocking on the city’s door! So get set to enjoy cool breezes, some welcome rains, and cleaner air – but don’t forget your rain gear and warm layers as October brings an exciting twist to Delhi’s weather saga!
