Bang! Bang! Up to 100 Bullets Rained on Busy Sydney Street, 20 Hurt in Shocking Attack

October 6, 2025

A scary and shocking shooting hit Sydney’s Inner West on Sunday evening, October 5, 2025. A man suddenly started firing his gun wildly at passing cars and people, sending the street into chaos. Police say he fired anywhere between 50 and 100 bullets! Joe Azar, who works just across the road, thought the loud explosions were fireworks or stones at first. “Some guy’s windshield blew up, then the bus stop glass shattered,” he told The Sydney Morning Herald. “The surreal feeling kicked in like, ‘Oh, this is what’s happening’. It was frantic. It all happened so quick, so I couldn’t comprehend what was going on.” Police rushed to the scene and locked down the street. They found the shooter in a unit above a business and arrested the 60-year-old man. Two rifles were taken from the spot. The man was hurt during his arrest and taken to hospital, but no charges have been filed yet. The shooting left many injured. One man came to the hospital with a gunshot wound and is in serious condition. Another 19 people suffered from cuts caused by broken glass or shrapnel, with several needing hospital care. New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon called the event “serious and terrifying” on local radio 2GB. He said, “There were no known links to terrorism activity or any gang activity.” A witness named Tadgh told ABC how shocking it was: “It was very loud and ‘bang, bang, bang’ and flash-bangs and sparks and smoke and the whole works. It was something out of a movie, really.” Australia rarely sees such mass shootings, thanks to a strict ban on automatic and semi-automatic guns put in place after a 1996 tragedy in Tasmania. Yet, tough moments still happen – like when in August 2025, Dezi Freeman, accused of killing two police officers, escaped into the wild. The police are still investigating this latest terrifying shooting in Sydney, hoping to understand why it happened and how to keep everyone safe.
