Kolkata came alive with a splash of bright colors, deep devotion, and heartfelt emotions on Dashami, the grand finale of Durga Puja. The famous Bagbazar Durga Puja Mandap was buzzing with women joyfully playing Sindur Khela. In this lively ritual, married women smeared vivid red vermilion on each other's faces, sharing laughter and blessings. As Sunita Das, a regular visitor, said, “It’s the most joyous moment of Puja. We leave behind all worries and celebrate togetherness and sisterhood.” The glowing red sindur on traditional sarees painted a beautiful picture of festivity and faith. The excitement later moved to Ratan Babu Ghat in Baranagar, where families gathered on the riverbanks for the magical Visharjan ceremony. Devotees immersed the Goddess Durga's idols into the flowing waters with prayers and chants flooding the air. Some eyes sparkled with tears, others lifted their voices in joyful songs. Local resident Anupam Chatterjee shared, “It’s emotional every year. Watching the goddess depart is bittersweet — she returns every year, but today, the farewell is always special.” Organisers and volunteers praised the great spirit of community on this special day. A member of the Bagbazar Puja committee explained, “People from all walks of life come together for these rituals. It’s more than a festival; it’s a celebration of our culture and identity.” From the playful bursts of red in Sindur Khela to the loving farewells at Visharjan, Kolkata showed its heart and soul. This festival is not just a tradition — it’s a joyous melody of devotion, friendship, and togetherness that keeps the city’s spirit shining bright year after year.
