The golden era of Indian cinema has lost one of its sparkling stars. Sandhya Shantaram, known for her mesmerising dance moves and expressive acting, passed away at 87, according to IANS. Born as Vijaya Deshmukh in Andhra Pradesh, she moved to Mumbai chasing her dream of films. Soon, she became the leading lady and later wife of the legendary filmmaker V. Shantaram. Together, they created films that still shine in memory and music. Sandhya’s career took off in the 1950s and 60s, starring in Hindi and Marathi films that have become classics. From the rhythmic magic of "Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje" (1955) to the social drama "Do Aankhen Barah Haath" (1958) and the colorful visual treat "Navrang" (1959), she brought grace, deep emotion, and unmatched energy to the screen. Her songs, like “Jhanak Jhanak Tori Payal Baje Payaliya” and “Nain So Nain Nahin Milao,” turned into cultural treasures, still loved by fans even today. In Marathi cinema, Sandhya made a big mark with "Pinjra" (1972). Her performance was iconic for its depth and poise. Even today, songs like “Jaa Re Hat Natkhat” from the film remain super popular, proving her art crosses generations. Sandhya Shantaram’s magic was not only in acting but in blending dance, drama, and charm into performances that inspire even now. Her last film was the Marathi movie "Chandanachi Choli Ang Ang Jali" in 1975, for which she won the Filmfare Award Marathi for Best Actress. Famous filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar expressed his sadness on her passing, saying, “Her iconic roles in films like Pinjra, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, Navrang, and Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje will always be cherished.” He praised her “remarkable talent and mesmerizing dance skills,” calling her a true cinematic icon. (@imbhandarkar) Indian politician and cricket administrator Ashish Shelar also shared his grief. He said the news of her death is "deeply saddening" and applauded her amazing contributions to Marathi and Hindi cinema. Shelar noted that Sandhya’s "exceptional acting and dancing skills" left a lasting mark on audiences. He added, "Her unforgettable performances in films like Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, and especially Pinjra will always remain etched in the hearts of viewers."
