Kaziranga Honors Late Singer Zubeen Garg by Naming New Elephant Calf 'Mayabini'

October 5, 2025

Silchar bursts with joy as Kaziranga National Park celebrates a beautiful new life—a female elephant calf! But this isn't just any calf; her name carries magic and memories. The calf is named Mayabini, inspired by one of the most beloved songs by late singer Zubeen Garg. What a wonderful tribute! The park’s director, Sonali Ghosh, shared the heart-touching reason behind this memorable naming. She said, "This is our way of paying tribute to the late singer, who was a great animal lover and a strong advocate for environmental causes." The newborn arrived on a bright Saturday, and soon after, Assam’s Environment and Forests Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary decided that this precious calf should carry a special name. Zubeen Garg, who sadly passed away on September 19 in Singapore, was deeply connected to nature and the Northeast's cultural spirit. He was to perform at the Northeast India Festival (NEIF) the very next day—a festival that celebrates Northeast India's rich culture. Minister Patowary shared his excitement on social media platform X, writing, "Heartening news on World Animal Day — Kuwari, the elephant of Kaziranga, has given birth to a healthy female calf! With immense affection and public goodwill, we’ve named her ‘MAYABINI’ — a symbol of new life, hope, and harmony in the wild." Kaziranga National Park is home to nearly 2,000 elephants, including the ones in the nearby Karbi Anglong Elephant Reserve. This bustling elephant family now welcomes Mayabini, whose name echoes the soulful melody of Zubeen's song loved by millions. This loving gesture beautifully blends wildlife charm with cultural tribute, giving us all a reason to smile and remember the vibrant spirit of Zubeen Garg!
