In a thrilling showdown at the World Weightlifting Championships in Forde, Norway, Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu bagged the silver medal in the 48kg category. Chanu's total lift was a powerful 199 kg, proving she is still among the world's best. But the show-stealer was North Korea's Ri Song-gum. She ruled the 48kg division by grabbing three gold medals on day one! Ri lifted a staggering 91kg in the snatch and followed it with an incredible 122kg in the clean and jerk. Her total of 213kg is not just huge — it's a new world record! Adding more sparkle, Ri won her second-straight overall world title with these phenomenal lifts. Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen took the bronze with a solid 198kg total, right behind Chanu. Mirabai Chanu’s journey has been shining bright for years. The 31-year-old champion had earlier won gold in the same weight category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in August and is back with strong hopes for Paris 2024. She first grabbed gold in this 48kg weight class in the 2017 World Championships in Anaheim and then a silver in 2022 at Bogota in the 49kg group. On the men's side, Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Lovepreet Singh is leading the Indian team. Lovepreet also earned a bronze earlier this year at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, alongside shining gold medalists Ajith Narayana and Ajaya Babu Valluri. The Indian squad for the World Weightlifting Championships 2025 includes Mirabai Chanu (48kg), Koyel Bar (53kg), BindyarDevi Sorokhaibam (58kg), Nirupama Devi Seram (63kg), Harjinder Kaur (69kg), Vanshita Verma (86kg), Mehak Sharma (86kg+), and the men’s team with Rishikanta Singh Chanambam (60kg), Muthupandi Raja (65kg), Ajith Narayana (71kg), Ajaya Babu Valluri (79kg), Abhishek Nipane (88kg), Dilbag Singh (94kg), and Lovepreet Singh (110kg+). As the competition heats up, India's lifters are ready to flex their muscles on the world stage!
