Winter Blasts U.S.! Snowfall Hits Alaska, Freeze Warnings in Northeast & Colorado

October 4, 2025

Get ready for a chilly drama across the U.S.! The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter weather advisories sweeping through Alaska, the Northeast, and Colorado. Snow lovers in Alaska could see as much as 6 inches of snowfall, especially in high mountain areas, while the Northeast faces biting freeze warnings that threaten plants and outdoor plumbing. In Central Alaska, places like the Chena Hot Springs Resort and roads near milepost 34 are expecting 3 to 5 inches of snow. Areas along the Steese Highway and the White Mountains could pile up to 6 inches! NWS warns: “Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes.” So, if you’re out and about, get ready to slow down and stay alert. Fairbanks is already feeling winter’s touch early with over an inch of snow last weekend — a whole two weeks ahead of the usual October 9 snowfall! NWS Fairbanks tweeted, “this snow is unlikely to stick around, but keep an eye on the horizon as winter is coming!” Moving to the Northeast, freeze warnings are in place for parts of New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire, where temperatures are dropping into the upper 20s and low 30s. The NWS cautions, “Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.” So, farmers and gardeners beware! Northern and central Pennsylvania, southern Maine, western Massachusetts, and Colorado’s San Luis Valley face frost advisories. Meteorologist Mark Pellerito from NWS Binghamton said, “Thursday night will still be quite chilly... many of the current freeze warning counties could end up with at least a frost advisory for Thursday night. After Thursday night, we will be in a warmer spell.” Enjoy those sunshine-filled weekend highs near 70s to 80s! The NWS in Vermont added, “A freeze warning and frost advisory is in effect for parts of the region tonight. Minimum temperatures will be cold enough overnight for frost formation and even a hard freeze in parts of our region.” Travelers, remember: roads will get slippery, especially Thursday night and Friday morning. The NWS advice? Slow down, use caution, and check road conditions by calling 511. Don’t forget to watch your step — icy sidewalks and stairs can be dangerous too! So, whether you’re shoveling snow in Alaska, protecting plants in the Northeast, or wrapping up warm in Colorado, winter is flexing its muscles early this year. Stay safe, stay warm, and keep an eye on updates from your local weather service! FAQs: Q1: Which areas have winter advisories? Parts of Alaska, Northeast U.S., and Colorado.
