The Congress party turned up the heat on Prime Minister Narendra Modi this Wednesday for his silence on the shocking violence in Gaza, labeling it as "moral cowardice" and a "total betrayal" of India's core values. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh fired tweets blasting Modi for welcoming US President Donald Trump's new 20-point plan for Gaza. "To appease his good friend President Trump and in solidarity with his other good friend Bibi Netanyahu, Prime Minister Modi has welcomed President Trump's new 20-point plan for Gaza," Ramesh wrote on X. But he asked some tough questions: "Where are the people of Gaza themselves in the system of governance proposed? Where is the roadmap for a full-fledged Palestinian state to come into being?" Ramesh highlighted that Palestinian statehood is recognized by 157 UN countries, with India leading that support back in November 1988. "Where is the accountability for the genocide that has been carried out in Gaza over the past twenty months?" he demanded. The Congress chief called Modi's silence on the killing of tens of thousands of civilians "extreme moral cowardice" and a betrayal of India's historic stand. The Congress Working Committee (CWC) last week also voiced its "profound distress" about the continuing "genocide" of innocent civilians in Gaza. The CWC lamented, "India has always been a beacon of moral conscience and the champion of the post-colonial world, it has now shamefully been reduced to a silent spectator. Our foreign policy has now acquired a moral taint." Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Modi praised Trump's Gaza plan, calling it "a viable path to long-term peace, security and development for the Palestinian and Israeli people, as well as the larger West Asian region." He hoped that "all concerned will come together behind President Trump's initiative and support this effort to end conflict and secure peace." Trump's plan includes forming a temporary governing board in Gaza, headed by himself and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. But whether Hamas will agree remains uncertain. With India caught between historic support on Palestinian statehood and current diplomatic ties, its silence and Modi's stand have sparked fierce criticism from Congress. The party’s message is loud and clear: when innocent lives are at stake, silence is not golden—it’s a serious moral failure.
