Canada Declares India’s Bishnoi Gang a Terrorist Entity to Fight Diaspora Crime Surge

September 30, 2025

Get ready for a serious shakeup! The Canadian government has just stepped up big against the India-based Bishnoi gang, led by Lawrence Bishnoi, by officially naming them a terrorist group. This means Canadians cannot give money or help to this gang anymore. Plus, the police can seize their property and freeze their bank accounts! This is a massive move to fight crime and fear spread by this gang. Last year, Canadian officials pointed fingers at India for using the Bishnoi gang to carry out murders and extortions right here in Canada, especially targeting those who want a separate Sikh nation called Khalistan. India denies this and says it is helping Canada stop money flowing to the gang. But tensions are high — Canada even blamed Indian officials for the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. The government’s statement said, "The Bishnoi Gang is a transnational criminal organization operating primarily out of India. They have a presence in Canada and are active in areas with significant diaspora communities. The Bishnoi Gang engages in murder, shootings and arson, and generates terror through extortion and intimidation. They create a climate of insecurity in these communities by targeting them, their prominent community members, businesses, and cultural figures." With this, Canada now lists 88 terrorist groups under its Criminal Code. Right here in British Columbia, places like Abbotsford and Surrey have felt the heat of Bishnoi-linked violence and extortion. Police reacted fast — launching “Operation Community Shield” in Abbotsford, forming an extortion-fighting unit in Surrey, and creating a powerful 40-officer RCMP task force. A safety official from B.C. said with three strong police teams workign against the Bishnoi gang, this is one of the highest-priority cases in Western Canada. If these efforts hold strong, they expect Bishnoi’s Canadian presence to break apart or go into hiding. Already, whispers say the gang may be splitting into smaller groups. But wait, it's not just the Bishnoi gang causing trouble! Other gangs with foreign ties also threaten diaspora communities. The US says a British Columbia Hells Angel was recruited by Iranian spies to help kill Iranian dissidents in the US. Chinese crime groups tied to Beijing also play a role in Canada's diaspora tensions. For Sikh communities in B.C. and Ontario who’ve faced threats and extortion for years, today’s announcement is a mixed bag — relief that Canada is fighting back, but also worry about what’s next. Now Canada’s law enforcement and spies must turn this new terrorist tag into real action that protects people on the ground. Will this be the end of Bishnoi’s shadow in Canada? Only time will tell!
