Bangladesh Bans Fairs Near Durga Puja Mandaps to Stop Cannabis and Alcohol Use

September 10, 2025

Get ready for Durga Puja in Bangladesh—but with a big twist! The government has announced that no fairs will be allowed near the Puja mandaps this year. Why? Because these fairs often attract anti-social elements who consume cannabis and alcohol, causing trouble. Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the home affairs adviser, made this clear on Monday before the biggest religious festival of minority Hindus in Bangladesh. "This time, fairs will not be permitted. However, one or two shops may be allowed, but only with the permission of puja celebration committees," he explained to reporters after a meeting to prepare for the festival. When asked if the Puja committees had any worries about this decision, he said no. They were confident and optimistic that Durga Puja would be celebrated peacefully. This year, about 33,000 Puja mandaps are expected to be set up all over the country! To keep everyone safe, the government has even developed a mobile application to boost security during the festivities. So, no noisy fairs nearby means the focus stays on devotion, fun, and peace for this grand celebration!
