The GST Council has just given a big thumbs-up to slash GST rates on many common items like hair oil, corn flakes, TVs, and even personal health and life insurance policies. The new system, starting from September 22, will feature just two tax slabs – 5% and 18% – making life simpler and lighter on the pocket. RSS group Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) hailed this as a “bold and people-friendly” reform under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “visionary” leadership. R Sundaram, SJM national convenor, said, "Reduction and simplification of the GST rates is not just a fiscal move but a Swadeshi-oriented reform that will encourage domestic industries, empower MSMEs, support traders and artisans and further strengthen the foundation of 'Make in India' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'." He added that cutting taxes for households and MSMEs will boost their buying power, sparking a chain reaction that could lift the entire economy. Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) general secretary Ravindra Himte called it a "significant step" toward a fair tax system for common people. He noted, "The old system heavily taxed daily needs, but the new next-gen reforms focus on lower rates for basic goods and higher ones on luxury items used by the rich." Himte also urged companies to quickly pass these savings to customers by lowering prices. Laghu Udyog Bharati, representing small industries, praised the move as a "landmark" for India’s journey to self-reliance. Leaders Ghanshyam Ojha and Om Prakash Gupta praised PM Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for this "long-awaited reform." They said, "GST 2.0 reforms will not only benefit industries but also ensure that consumers enjoy lower prices and better access to goods and services." This fresh GST makeover is being called a "double dhamaka of happiness before Diwali" by PM Modi himself. With just two simple GST rates, the new tax structure promises to make shopping easier and help Indian industries grow stronger.
