Malayalam actor Sudev Nair, who fans love seeing in khaki police uniform, is all set to wow everyone with his first-ever Malayalam web series. The show, named Kammattam, starring Sudev as Antonio George, an investigating officer, is creating waves with its exciting trailer. It will arrive just in time for Onam, on September 4 exclusively on Zee5. In an exclusive chat with ETimes, Sudev shared his excitement, "The Malayalam industry produces incredible crime thrillers, and it’s been a long-standing wish of mine to be part of one. Though Kammattam is a web series, it offers a truly cinematic experience. From the visuals to the narrative hooks, it’s going to be a thrilling watch. The story does get intense, but it's still something you can enjoy from your couch. It will keep you on the edge of your seat, but without overwhelming your mind." Originally, the character Antonio George was written as an older, down-and-out alcoholic officer who was brilliant but had lost his sharpness due to personal issues. Sudev even gained weight and added silver streaks to his hair to look the part. But all that changed when he arrived on set wearing the police uniform. "Thanks to my still-fit physique, the director reimagined Antonio as a younger, sharper officer. The genre also became more layered and intense," explained Sudev, revealing this surprise twist behind the scenes. What makes Kammattam extra special? It is based on real-life police cases that viewers might have read as news headlines. Sudev said, "We’ve read them as headlines, but Kammattam explores the ‘why’ and the ‘how.’ It navigates the human connections and motives behind each crime, making the series more powerful and emotionally engaging." Despite such a big story, the entire series was shot in a lightning-fast 11 days! "The biggest challenge for me was keeping the same energy no matter the time - 4 a.m. or midday. We had long 24-hour shoots. But the true heroes were the crew, working non-stop to set up the next scenes while I caught quick naps," said Sudev, praising the hardworking Malayalam cinema team. On the bright future for Malayalam OTT content, Sudev feels optimistic. "The only real challenge Malayalam web series face is the longer story format, which demands more time and money. But once we master that, a golden era for Malayalam OTT content awaits. Kammattam, as the first original Malayalam series on this platform, opens new doors for storytellers," he concluded.
