NEW YORK: The heat is on, but not from where you might think! The American Jewish Committee (AJC), a big Jewish advocacy group in the US, has fired back at American officials who are pointing fingers at India for buying Russian oil. While some US leaders accuse India of supporting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s "war machine" in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the AJC says, "Wait a minute!" They argue that India isn’t responsible for the conflict and deserves better treatment. Recently, Peter Navarro, a White House trade adviser, stirred the pot by saying the Ukraine war is "Modi's war" and that the "road to peace" somehow goes through New Delhi. These strong words shocked many. Responding boldly, the AJC tweeted it was "mystified and deeply troubled by the chorus of attacks on India by US officials" and called Navarro's words a "scurrilous charge." They admitted, "We regret energy-hungry India's reliance on Russian oil," but quickly added, "India isn't responsible for Putin's war crimes, is a sister democracy and an increasingly important strategic partner of the United States, and has a crucial role to play in Great Power competition." Their message? It’s time to hit the reset button on this vital US-India relationship. The background involves heightened tensions as former President Donald Trump’s administration had slapped India with 25 percent tariffs in retaliation for its trade policies—plus an extra 25 percent tariff specifically targeting India’s purchases of Russian oil. Despite such moves, India continues to stand firm. So, in this high-stakes drama of global politics, energy deals, and diplomacy, the American Jewish Committee wants Washington to ease up on India and focus on building a stronger, smarter partnership instead. After all, India is no villain here; it’s a democracy juggling tough choices on the world stage!
