NEW DELHI: The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is celebrating its 11th birthday, and what an incredible journey it has been! Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami took to X on Wednesday to highlight how this massive financial drive has transformed India's economy and brought millions of people into the banking world. "The visionary foresight and resolve of the Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji laid the foundation for a transformation 11 years ago, which gave a new direction to India's economic progress," said CM Dhami. "The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, launched 11 years ago, connected crores of citizens to the financial system and laid the cornerstone of an empowered India." It's jaw-dropping — more than 56 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened so far! This shows how the scheme has empowered citizens to become self-reliant, linking even the remotest villages to the booming economic mainstream. "Today, through more than 56 crore Jan Dhan accounts, the work of empowering citizens with self-reliance, connecting villages to the economic mainstream, and achieving financial inclusion is unprecedented," added the Chief Minister. But wait, this isn't just any scheme. "This is not just a scheme, but a historic initiative that gives wings to the dreams of crores of people," CM Dhami said. Launched on August 28, 2014, PMJDY is one of the largest financial inclusion missions in the world. Here are some magical numbers from the Economy sector's statement: - Over 56.16 crore bank accounts are live under PMJDY. - Total deposits have crossed a whopping Rs 2.67 lakh crore by mid-August 2025. - Women own 56% of these accounts, showing a major push towards gender equality in money matters. The scheme's goal was clear — to give every unbanked adult in India a bank account, a financial ID, and access to vital services like loans, insurance, and pensions. It's about "banking the unbanked, securing the unsecured, funding the unfunded, and serving the unserved and underserved." Thanks to PMJDY, the government now runs Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) smoothly for 327 schemes, cutting out leakages and middlemen. The accounts have exploded from 14.72 crore in 2015 to over 56.16 crore by August 2025. A huge 67% of these accounts belong to rural and semi-urban areas, while the remaining 33% are from urban and metro regions. In short, PMJDY has truly changed India's financial map, bringing millions within the banking fold and boosting the economy in colorful ways. So, is it no wonder that this scheme is called a historic milestone for the nation?
