The dark shadow of Maoist violence has struck again in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district. On the evening of August 27, 2025, a 30-year-old shikshadoot named Laxman Barse was killed by Maoists, police confirmed. Barse was a temporary visiting teacher in government schools. The attackers, armed with sharp weapons, struck around 7:30 pm in Silger village under Jagargunda police limits. Why did the Maoists target him? The exact reason is still unclear. But police say Maoists often kill villagers they suspect of informing the police. This incident fits a disturbing pattern. Police revealed that when Barse’s family tried to stop the Maoists, they too were brutally beaten. The Jagargunda police are investigating and have promised to share detailed updates soon. This is not an isolated tragedy. On July 14, two other shikshadoots were killed by Maoists in the nearby Bijapur district, in the Farsegarh area. Those teachers were also suspected of being police informers. Earlier, on February 19, two men, including a shikshadoot, were killed in Dantewada district for similar reasons. This wave of attacks has rocked the Bastar region, which covers seven districts including Sukma, Bijapur, and Dantewada. So far in 2025, roughly 30 people have lost their lives in Maoist violence here. The region continues to face this grim challenge as government efforts and local courage try to break the cycle of fear. The death of Laxman Barse adds to the tragedy and calls for urgent action to protect innocent lives in these conflict zones.
