NEW DELHI: Get ready for a big celebration! PM Narendra Modi has announced grand plans to mark the 200th birth anniversary of Jyotiba Phule, a famous 19th century social reformer who fought hard against caste discrimination and stood for women's education. Modi calls Phule's teachings and the idea of giving "priority to the backward" a great inspiration for India. Born in the Mali caste, Phule’s values are now stepping into the spotlight as Modi’s government works hard to make his dream a reality. "By giving priority to the backward, we want to reach the heights of transformation. We want to put in our utmost effort for this," Modi said. He also promised to bring these ideas to life with "transparent policies" that help every backward person in India. Phule's wife, Savitribai Phule, is also remembered with warmth for her "passionate and tireless" work to promote women's education. Both Phule and Savitribai have long been honored by the BJP, but Modi's new celebration plans are like a warm hug showing deep respect to these heroes. Why now? Experts say this move is important for upcoming political decisions like the vice president’s appointment, the choice of a new BJP chief, and Bihar elections, where the OBC voters hold huge power. Phule is a big figure for OBC groups like Kushwahas and Koeris in Bihar, who see him as one of their own because they share similar farming and horticulture roots. Modi did not stop at OBCs. He also spoke for Dalits and other oppressed and deprived groups, urging the government to always be "pro-people" and ‘‘proactively positive’’ in helping their lives get better. To clear misunderstandings, Modi said some think his government’s welfare work is just like earlier governments. But he said, "We are implementing schemes on the ground. We emphasise saturation because if there is any true execution of social justice, it is in saturation where no eligible person is left out." This celebration also shows BJP’s growing respect for Maharashtra’s legendary reformers. After adding B R Ambedkar to its 'Hall of Inspirations,' the party is now embracing Phule too. This broadening of heroes reflects BJP’s expanding reach beyond its original core, a trend that Mr. Modi strongly pushed during his time as Prime Minister. So, mark your calendars! India is all set to honor Jyotiba Phule, a true symbol of change, equity, and hope for millions.
