February 5, 2026
Cancer cases are rising fast in India and Andhra Pradesh. But up to 85% of these cases can be prevented with awareness and simple precautions, said D.S. Raju Naidu, president of the Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (AP chapter). He spoke at a World Cancer Day event in Vijayawada on February 4.
Dr. Raju Naidu stressed regular exercise, healthy food, good sleep, and avoiding stress as key steps to prevent cancer. He said breast and cervical cancers are common in women. Cancers caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) can mostly be stopped by good hygiene and vaccination.
For men, oral and lung cancers are mainly due to tobacco. "Stopping smoking and tobacco use can help prevent these cancers," he added.
He urged everyone to get regular cancer screenings for early detection. A new book titled "Cancers – Early Detection Methods – Preventive Measures," authored by oncologists D. Raghunatha Rao, D. Leela, and M.V. Ramanaiah, was released at the event. The book offers valuable cancer prevention information.
G. Vijay Prakash, district general secretary of Praja Arogya Vedika, said the group works on health issues like kidney disease, thalassemia, pollution, and has held camps on cancer mental health, heart disease, and women's and children's health. Those interested in the book can call 9490332600.
