On February 1, 2026, a mob attacked over 10 Muslim families in Dutkaiya village, Gariaband district, Chhattisgarh. The violence was triggered after three men allegedly assaulted locals earlier that day. A 35-year-old woman survivor described how her husband was severely beaten and her family threatened. "Whenever I saw images of riots on my mobile phone or TV, I would cry, wondering how one human being could do this to another. But that day, it happened to me," she said. The woman’s husband is now in a wheelchair with most of his body in bandages. The mob forced her to chant “Jai Shri Ram” under threat to kill her seven-year-old son. Their home was set on fire and damaged. She said, "I tried to block the door with a cupboard, but they used a full gas cylinder to break it down. There was no escape." Other Muslim families fled to the state capital, Raipur. Another victim reported threats of sexual assault against herself and her teenage daughter. She said her husband was injured protecting them. Valuable items and a new car were lost in the chaos. Seven policemen were also injured during the clashes. Gariaband Superintendent of Police Vedvrata Sirmour reported seven arrests linked to the violence. Police are working with local leaders to ensure safety and allow Muslim families to return. Some residents have already visited the village to collect their belongings. Syed Naved Ashraf from the Raza Unity Foundation called for a "transparent, impartial, and high-level investigation." Victims are demanding swift justice and proper protection for their future.
