Zambian Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) announced the arrest of Ahmed Muharram, a "notorious" Tanzanian drug trafficker, in Lusaka. The arrest took place during raids on Tuesday, where large amounts of marijuana and cough syrup containing codeine were seized. The DEC described Muharram as a "known transnational drug trafficker" who was on their watch-list. The 40-year-old suspect has not commented yet. The operation included seizing 221.2kg of cannabis hidden in a lorry in Lusaka's Lilayi area. At Muharram's home, officers found an additional 1,159.6kg of "high-grade" cannabis. This totaled 1,380.8kg of marijuana confiscated. A Zambian accomplice was also arrested, thought to be part of the organized trafficking network. Other arrests included a Zambian national trafficking 55 boxes of Benylin with codeine, two Zambians caught with cannabis in their vehicle, and two Burundian nationals in Chirundu. The Burundians had cannabis hidden in spare tyre, gas compressors, and mixed with sugar, salt, and paint inside tins and buckets. The DEC stated, "All suspects have since been detained in lawful custody and will appear in court soon." Zambia classes marijuana as illegal, and trafficking carries heavy penalties. The country continues to fight cannabis and heroin abuse and trafficking. The DEC reaffirmed its commitment, saying it wants to ensure Zambia "was neither used as a corridor nor a destination for drug trafficking."
