14 Dead in Migrant Speedboat Collision with Greek Coastguard near Chios
February 4, 2026
A crash between a speedboat carrying migrants and a Greek coastguard boat off Chios island in the eastern Aegean killed at least 14 people, confirmed the coastguard. Rescue efforts included four patrol ships, an air force helicopter, and a private boat with divers searching for missing passengers. The coastguard rescued 24 survivors and sent them to a Chios hospital, including two injured coastguard officers. The total number on the speedboat is unknown. Video showed a person carried in a blanket from the coastguard boat to an emergency vehicle, while others helped two children to safety. Officials have not yet explained how the collision happened or identified the victims and passengers. Greece is a key entry to the EU for refugees from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Fatal accidents are sadly common during the risky crossing from Turkey to nearby Greek islands. Despite tighter patrols and allegations of deportation without asylum checks, many continue to attempt the journey. The EU has recently updated migration rules to speed deportations and increase detentions.
