French Teacher Critical After Knife Attack by 14-Year-Old Student
February 4, 2026
A 60-year-old female art teacher was critically injured after being stabbed three to four times in the chest by a 14-year-old student in south-eastern France. The attack happened in front of about 20 students. The pupil ran from the classroom but was caught in the schoolyard and arrested. Toulon's public prosecutor Raphaël Balland said, "The suspect did not appear to have had a religious or political motive. All we know is that there had been tensions with this teacher recently, and he was angry with her." The school, La Guicharde, was evacuated and lessons were cancelled the next day. France's Education Minister Edouard Geffray said he was going "immediately" to the school in Sanary-sur-Mer. On X, he wrote, "My thoughts immediately go to the victim, her family, and the entire educational community, whose deep shock I share." This incident is part of a worrying trend of student attacks in French schools. In 2025, a 14-year-old was charged with murder after stabbing a teaching assistant. Earlier in April, a student killed a girl and injured others in a knife attack in Nantes. In 2020, teacher Samuel Paty was murdered outside his Paris suburb school in an attack driven by religious extremism.
