Texas Republicans Blame Indian Voters for Senate District 9 Loss Amid Rising Anti-Indian Sentiment
February 3, 2026
Texas Republicans lost a special Senate District 9 election, sparking heated claims about Indian-American voters. Florida Republican leader Chandler Langevin said, "If Republicans lost a special election because of an Indian voting bloc…then they have all the more reason to deport every Indian in Texas." Indian-Americans and others rejected this harsh statement.
In recent weeks, North Texas has seen growing hate against Indians and Hindus. Politicians, social media commentators, and influencers have pushed anti-Indian views. Some claimed Texas has changed culturally due to an 'Indian takeover' and complained that Indians are taking jobs. This led Texas Governor Greg Abbott to freeze H-1B hiring in state agencies and universities.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton launched an investigation into three Indian firms that hired H-1B workers, demanding details about their employees. Additionally, a gold scam involving Indian jewelry stores was exposed.
The election loss triggered a MAGA meltdown. Some MAGA supporters even mistakenly thought Democrat Taylor Rehmet, who won the election, was Indian due to his name. Many blamed Indian-American voters falsely, even though they form less than 2% of the voters.
Former President Donald Trump, who endorsed Republican Leigh Wambsganss, distanced himself: "I’m not involved in that. That’s a local Texas race." Rehmet said Trump was not a factor and emphasized community focus.
Suhag Shukla, Hindu American Foundation executive director, said, "Republicans did not have winning strategies with ICE agents shooting people in the streets, racist attacks on Indian-Americans and politicians calling for shutting down Hindu temples."
The Indian-American Advocacy Council said the loss was not due to Indian voters. They stated, "They lost because... millions of decent, good-faith Americans don’t want racism, xenophobia, and trash politics running their communities. We LOVE each and every one of those Americans. They are on OUR TEAM and there's nothing you can do about it," responding directly to Langevin's call for deportations.
