UAE Fatwa Council Approves Haq Al Laila Celebration as Islamically Permissible
February 3, 2026
The UAE Council for Fatwa has clarified that celebrating Haq Al Laila is allowed in Islam if it does not violate key Islamic principles. Haq Al Laila is an Emirati cultural event held on the night between the 14th and 15th days of the Islamic month Sha‘ban, about two weeks before Ramadan. Children wear traditional clothes and go door-to-door asking for sweets and gifts.
The Council said such customs are generally permitted unless forbidden by Islam. They said when Islamic law is silent on a practice, people can follow it with leniency. The tradition’s social goals like joy, kindness, and community bonds align with Islamic values. Historical reports about the mid-Sha‘ban night mention divine mercy and forgiveness but recommend worship rather than mandate it.
The Council emphasized that prayers, Quran reading, and supplication on this night are recommended, not required. Social celebrations like sharing sweets and family events are fine as long as nothing prohibited occurs. People who do not observe Haq Al Laila bear no blame, and public disputes over it should be avoided.
Across the UAE, Haq Al Laila festivities are in full swing. Dubai Police hosted fun community events at Global Village with shows and giveaways. Abu Dhabi and Sharjah ran heritage games, food stalls, and cultural activities to preserve Emirati customs. These activities are part of efforts like the Season of Wulfa to celebrate culture year-round.
This fatwa comes when many Muslims worldwide are thinking deeply about how local customs fit with religious rules. While some see celebrations beyond Eid as innovations, the UAE Fatwa Council’s ruling supports cultural traditions with respect for Islamic law. It offers clear guidance from scholars to balance heritage and faith.
As mid-Sha‘ban night nears on February 3, 2026, families across the Emirates are blending festive joy and spiritual reflection, continuing a cherished path from Sha‘ban to Ramadan.
