Brooke Day, a 22-year-old snowboarder from Queensland, Australia, died in a ski lift accident at Tsugaike Mountain resort, Japan. The accident happened on Friday when her backpack’s loose waist belt caught on the lift while she was getting off. The backpack hooked on the lift, dragging her along snow and suspending her mid-air, the resort said. An attendant pressed the emergency button. Day was rushed to hospital after what appeared to be a cardiac arrest but did not survive. Tributes poured in for Day. The Maroochydore Roos AFL Club called her “a talented young football player and cherished team mate” who was “always a positive and vibrant part of the group.” They said she never let setbacks affect the team. Kelly Louise Loe called coaching her “a pleasure” and Rach Crack said, “She was sweet, caring, and never gave up.” Other football clubs also offered condolences. Alex Surf Club on the Sunshine Coast remembered her as “a deeply valued and cherished part of our café team” whose humour and kindness lit up every room. Tsugaike Gondola Lift Co, which runs the resort, expressed deepest condolences to the family and apologized for the incident. They promised full cooperation with investigations and to improve safety measures. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it is providing consular aid to Brooke Day’s family and sent deepest condolences during this difficult time.
