Trump announces India-US trade deal; India stops buying Russian oil, tariffs cut to 18%

On February 2, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new trade deal with India. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised to stop buying Russian oil due to the war in Ukraine. Tariffs on Indian goods have been cut from 25% to 18% by the U.S. Previously, the U.S. had imposed 25% tariffs and an extra 25% because of India's purchases of Russian oil.
Mr. Trump said, “Delighted that Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18%.”
Mr. Modi thanked Trump and said on social media: “When two large economies and the world’s largest democracies work together, it benefits our people and unlocks immense opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.”
