Project Shakti Distributes Reusable Sanitary Pads to 60,000 Girls in Telangana
February 2, 2026
Rotarians, State Bank of India, and Unipads Foundation have launched Project Shakti to help 60,000 girl students in Telangana with reusable sanitary pads. The project costs ₹2.5 crore and started at Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s University in Hyderabad. Collector Hari Chandana Dasari gave 7,000 kits worth ₹35 lakh to the university students on Monday.
Each kit has three reusable pads. They can last 12 to 16 months if cared for properly. "The lifespan depends on the quality of fabric, frequency of use, and appropriate washing and drying practices. Maintained well, the pads remain effective and comfortable for multiple menstrual cycles," said a project release.
The full distribution to 60,000 students in many districts will finish by March. The Collector told students to be "menstrual independent," stressing control, choice, and dignity without shame or reliance on others.
She said the cloth pads are cost-effective, eco-friendly, washable, and gentle on the skin. They reduce waste and irritation, supporting long-term menstrual dignity. The Collector also reminded that the Supreme Court of India views menstrual hygiene as part of the Right to Life under Article 21 of the Constitution.
