Brave 13-Year-Old Swims 4km to Rescue Family Off Australia Coast
February 2, 2026
A 13-year-old boy has been praised for his incredible bravery after he swam 4km to save his family stranded off Australia's coast. The family was paddleboarding and kayaking in Geographe Bay near Quindalup, Western Australia, when strong winds pushed their inflatables away from shore. The teenager tried to paddle back to raise the alarm, but his kayak took in water. He then swam the remaining distance. "The bravery, strength and courage shown by this family were extraordinary, especially the young fella who swam 4km to raise the alarm," said the Naturaliste Volunteer Marine Rescue Group. Commander Paul Bresland called the boy's effort "superhuman," explaining to ABC News that "he swam in, he reckons, the first two hours with a life jacket on." The boy then removed the life jacket, thinking, "he's not going to make it with a life jacket on," and swam for two more hours without it. By 18:00 local time on Friday, the boy raised the alarm. Western Australia Police said a multi-agency search found the mother, her 12-year-old son, and 8-year-old daughter clinging to a paddleboard about 14km offshore around 20:30. A volunteer marine rescue vessel reached them, and all three were safely brought back to shore. Insp James Bradley highlighted the quick change in ocean conditions and praised the use of life jackets for their survival. He said, "The actions of the 13-year-old boy cannot be praised highly enough - his determination and courage ultimately saved the lives of his mother and siblings." Paramedics checked the family before hospital treatment. They were later discharged and visited the rescue team to thank them, according to ABC.
