Two Tigers Found Dead in Madhya Pradesh Forest, Probe Underway
February 2, 2026
Two tigers were found dead in the forests of Madhya Pradesh's Shahdol district on Monday, February 2, 2026. Forest officials discovered a tiger and a tigress in the North Shahdol area. Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) L Krishnamoorthy told PTI, "A team has rushed to the spot, and investigations have begun. As per the initial report, one tiger seems to have been killed in a territorial fight, while the other died due to electrocution." The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the investigation is complete. Madhya Pradesh is known as India's tiger State and has the highest number of tigers in the country. On January 20, the Madhya Pradesh High Court issued notices to the Centre and State government after a petition by wildlife activist Ajay Dubey. The petition highlighted that 54 tigers died in the State in 2025, marking the highest annual mortality since Project Tiger began. More than half of these deaths were due to unnatural causes.
