Victoria Police Launch New Search for Fugitive Dezi Freeman Nearly Five Months After Officers’ Killing
February 2, 2026
Victoria police have launched a major new five-day search for fugitive Dezi Freeman near Mount Buffalo National Park, about 300 km north of Melbourne. This comes almost five months after two police officers, Neal Thompson and Vadim de Waart-Hottart, were fatally shot at Freeman’s property in Porepunkah in late August.
More than 100 police and volunteers are involved in the search, which is based on fresh intelligence about gunshots heard shortly after the initial shooting. Despite a massive effort earlier involving 400 officers, Freeman, 56, remains at large. He was last seen fleeing into dense bushland.
Detectives have conducted firearms tests around the area and plan to use a NSW police cadaver dog in the search. Police are not ruling out any possibility - Freeman could be dead, hiding with help, or surviving alone.
Detective Inspector Adam Tilley said, "It remains our number one priority to locate Freeman and the extensive and systematic searches conducted over the past five months are testament to this."
Freeman has been described as armed and dangerous. Residents near the search area have been warned to stay alert and not approach him if seen.
Victoria police have also offered a $1 million reward, the largest in the state’s history, for information leading to Freeman’s capture. They also offer possible indemnity to encourage tips from the public.
The two slain officers were Detective Senior Constable Thompson, 59, who was close to retirement, and Senior Constable De Waart-Hottart, 34, who was temporarily assigned to the area.
This new search focuses on an area near where a similar large-scale search took place in December. Despite the previous efforts with drones, cadaver dogs, and line searches in difficult terrain, no trace of Freeman or his remains was found. Police continue to investigate thousands of leads through Taskforce Summit, formed in October.
