Congress Targets 70 Tamil Nadu Seats in 2026 Assembly Polls; Talks with DMK Continue
February 2, 2026
The Congress party has identified around 70 Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu that it wants to contest in the 2026 election. A party committee stated, “We are firm that our alliance with the DMK will continue, and it is for the high command to take decisions on issues such as power-sharing and the number of seats we should get. Focus is on identifying constituencies where we have a base and where our prospects are strong.” Rahul Gandhi’s visit in February is expected to boost the state unit's efforts. DMK leader Kanimozhi has already discussed seat-sharing and power-sharing with Rahul Gandhi. However, DMK has made it clear that power-sharing is not possible. On Sunday, members of the AICC committee for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry—Girish Chodankar, Suraj Hegde, TNCC president K. Selvaperunthagai, and Congress Legislative Party leader S. Rajeshkumar—met to discuss various issues. Nivedith Alva, an AICC representative, did not attend. Congress also wants to contest more seats in southern districts but avoids challenging DMK ministers and district secretaries. A committee member said, “We do not want to seek constituencies represented by or preferred by DMK Ministers and district secretaries. On the other hand, we are ready to take on the BJP on the ground.” The party plans to strengthen booth committees and BLA2 structures to improve election work. The leader added, “We can start seat-sharing talks once the DMK constitutes a committee for the purpose.”
