5-Year-Old Boy and Father Released by ICE, Return to Minnesota
February 1, 2026
A five-year-old boy, Liam Conejo Ramos, and his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, have been released from ICE custody in Texas and have returned to Minnesota. Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro, a Democrat, announced the news on Sunday, saying, "Liam is now home. With his hat and his backpack." The father and son were held at the Dilley detention center, sparking protests and a national outcry. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated, "ICE did NOT target or arrest a child." Their release followed an emergency order from US District Judge Fred Biery on Saturday. Judge Biery condemned the detention, saying it was driven by a "perfidious lust for unbridled power." He wrote, "The case has its genesis in the ill-conceived and incompetently implemented government pursuit of daily deportation quotas, apparently even if it requires traumatising children." The judge called for more humane and orderly immigration policies. Before their release, Congressman Castro noted on social media that Liam was struggling being away from family, school, and home. DHS stated the family entered the US illegally, but their lawyer said they sought asylum properly. On Sunday, DHS emphasized their commitment to uphold immigration laws and continue detaining those without legal rights to stay in the country.
