Russian Drone Attack Kills 12 Mine Workers in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk Region
February 1, 2026
A Russian drone hit a bus carrying mine workers in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, killing at least 12 people and wounding seven, officials said. The bus was about 65km from the frontline. Ukraine’s largest private energy company, DTEK, said the victims were returning from a mining shift. "The enemy drone hit near a company shuttle bus in the Pavlograd district. Preliminarily, 12 people were killed and seven more were wounded," said Oleksandr Ganzha, head of the regional military administration.
Earlier, another drone attack killed a man and woman in the city of Dnipro. Separately, a drone struck a maternity hospital in southern Zaporizhzhia, wounding at least seven people, including two women undergoing examinations.
These attacks coincided with the end of a brief reduction in Russian strikes announced by US President Donald Trump. Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to stop strikes on Kyiv and nearby towns during cold weather, though details were unclear.
Peace talks continue amid fierce fighting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a second round of talks on a US peace plan will begin on 4-5 February in Abu Dhabi. A surprise meeting between Russian and US officials occurred without Ukraine’s presence. Both sides remain far apart, especially on territory. Russia controls about 20% of Ukraine and wants full control over the eastern Donetsk region. Ukraine refuses to give up land, fearing it would encourage more Russian attacks.
The first round of talks last week did not bring a breakthrough. With heavy casualties and stalled diplomacy, the conflict remains tense and uncertain.
