Tiger From Tadoba Kills Three Cattle in East Godavari
February 1, 2026
A male tiger, believed to be from Maharashtra's Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR), attacked and killed three cattle—a cow, a buffalo, and a calf—in Torredu village, East Godavari district on February 1. The animal was last seen near the Godavari river’s western bank before entering Papikonda National Park on January 29. The tiger reportedly swam across the Godavari river using the Polavaram irrigation project and hunted cattle near Rajamahendravaram city. Forest officials spotted the tiger about 150 metres from the attack site at 11 a.m. while monitoring its movements. B. Prabhakara Rao, East Godavari District forest officer, said, "Early in December 2025, two male tigers left TATR. One was first seen in Khammam district after crossing the Pranahitha river in Telangana before entering Eluru district, Andhra Pradesh." He added, "By Sunday, the male tiger had swum across the Pranahitha and Godavari rivers adjacent to Papikonda National Park. Its pug marks were found near Polavaram Irrigation Project on January 31." The tiger rested for two days in Papikonda National Park and resumed hunting cattle. Due to safety concerns, the Forest Department suggested a two-day school holiday and a pause on agricultural activities in Rajamahendravaram rural area. Experts from Indira Gandhi Zoological Park and the Wildlife Institute of India will help tranquilise the tiger. Farmers affected by cattle losses will receive compensation.
