A teenager injured in the New Year's fire at a Crans-Montana bar has died, raising the death toll to 41. The victim was an 18-year-old Swiss national who passed away on January 31 in a Zurich hospital. The deadly fire started on January 1, 2026, at Le Constellation bar during New Year celebrations. The public prosecutor of Wallis canton, Beatrice Pilloud, said the death toll now stands at 41 but added no further information will be released now. The victims were mostly teenagers aged 14 to 39, with only four over 24 years old. Among the dead, there were 23 Swiss nationals and 18 foreigners including French, Italian, Belgian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Turkish citizens. The fire likely began when partygoers lit sparklers attached to champagne bottles too close to ceiling foam. Four people face criminal investigation: the bar's co-owners, the local head of public safety, and a former fire safety officer. After the fire, seriously injured patients were airlifted to hospitals across Switzerland and four other European countries. As of Monday, 44 patients were being treated abroad—18 in France, 12 in Italy, 8 in Germany, and 6 in Belgium—while 37 remained in Swiss hospitals. Patients continue to move between hospitals for treatment, with some still in intensive care.
