Union Budget 2026-27: Law Ministry Gets ₹4,509 Crore, Election Commission and Judiciary See Hike

The Ministry of Law and Justice received ₹4,509.06 crore in the Union Budget 2026-27. This is roughly ₹400 crore less than last year. In 2025-26, the ministry's allocation was ₹4,998.24 crore, and the revised estimate was ₹5,189 crore. The Election Commission of India sees a boost of about ₹80 crore, with a new allocation of ₹382.20 crore, up from ₹304 crore last year. Election expenses also get a rise to ₹367.99 crore from around ₹302 crore. The Supreme Court’s budget increased by about ₹75 crore to ₹622.11 crore, compared to ₹547 crore in 2025-26. The revised estimate last year was around ₹633 crore. Infrastructure development for the judiciary has been cut to ₹810 crore from ₹998 crore. Out of this, ₹200 crore is set aside for fast-track courts and ₹2 crore for village courts. The e-Courts Phase III project gets a big boost with ₹1,200 crore, highlighting the push towards a digital judiciary. The National Mission for Justice Delivery and Legal Reforms receives ₹1,240 crore, slightly more than last year. Legal aid is prioritized with ₹300 crore for the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System, supporting free quality legal help at the district level. The National Legal Services Authority’s funding increases from ₹200 crore to ₹250 crore. These budget decisions show focused investment in justice and legal services for 2026-27.
