Pakistan Military Kills 92 Militants in Balochistan After Deadly Attacks
February 1, 2026
Pakistan's military announced it has killed at least 92 militants following deadly attacks in Balochistan on Saturday. The military said 15 security service personnel and 18 civilians also lost their lives. They accused India of supporting the militants, an accusation India has denied repeatedly. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) rebel group claimed responsibility, saying dozens of soldiers were killed. These claims have not been independently verified.
Saturday's violence was one of the deadliest days in the impoverished province, where decades of ethnic insurgency persist. The military said militants attacked civilians around Quetta and other cities. In response, it launched “clearance” operations across Balochistan, aiming to counter the “evil design” of the rebels. Key buildings and roads in Quetta were sealed off. Mobile phone services were jammed, and regional trains stopped as safety measures.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the military efforts and pledged to "continue the war against terrorism until its complete eradication." Earlier, militants armed with grenades and guns struck 12 cities and towns, targeting police, paramilitary forces, prisons, and government buildings.
The BLA accuses Pakistan's federal government of exploiting Balochistan's rich mineral resources without helping locals. Activists blame security forces for enforced disappearances, which Islamabad denies. Balochistan has seen resistance against the Pakistani government since 1948, with militants seeking an independent Baloch state.
Balochistan shares borders with Iran and Taliban-controlled Afghanistan and has a long Arabian Sea coastline. It covers 44% of Pakistan's land but is home to only 5% of its population. The province is rich in natural resources like gas and minerals, with Balochs and Pashtuns as the main ethnic groups.
