Sammakka-Saralamma Jatara Ends Amid Devotee Crowds and Major Traffic Jams in Medaram
January 31, 2026
On Saturday evening, millions of devotees witnessed the tribal deities Sammakka and Saralamma being taken back to their sacred homes in a ritual called Vana Pravesham. This marked the end of the four-day biennial Sammakka–Saralamma Maha Jatara. Sammakka was carried to the holy groves on Chilakalagutta hill, while Saralamma returned to her temple at Kannepalli village. Pagiddaraju and Govindaraju were also taken back to their villages by Koya priests. Minister Seethakka and many leaders attended the event. Senior officials, including Women Development Secretary Anita Ramachandran, District Collector T.S. Divakara, and SP Sudhir R. Kekan, offered prayers before the deities left for Vana Pravesham.
Meanwhile, devotees faced serious traffic troubles. From Friday night to Saturday morning, roads between Pasra, Tadvai, and Medaram were clogged with vehicles at a standstill. Many essential supplies, like milk, were stuck on the roads. Devotees blamed poor traffic management despite a large police presence. "I started at midnight and reached Medaram only by 11:30 p.m. the next day," said Bharat from Hanamkonda. Officials pointed to misuse of special passes and poor ground-level management. Even road widening and AI technology failed to solve the congestion. Senior IPS officers later helped ease the jams by Saturday afternoon. Many devotees remained stranded at Medaram due to lack of Telangana RTC buses, caused by poor coordination. Sources said thousands of VIP and VVIP passes were given to politicians and officials who arrived in convoys, worsening traffic woes.
