January 31, 2026
Kollam Special Judge Mohit C. S on Saturday sentenced ex-police sub-inspector R. Mohanan to four years in prison for bribery. The court found him guilty of taking money to release a two-wheeler involved in a road accident and issuing an FIR copy. Mohanan was shown guilty under Sections 7 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was fined ₹20,000 as well. Public prosecutor Siju Rajan revealed Mohanan took ₹1,500 to issue the FIR and ₹2,000 to release the vehicle. Vigilance officials caught him accepting the bribe in a trap. The prosecution added Mohanan demanded bribes to register the crime and to give a copy of the mahazar. Mohanan denied the charges, saying he never took bribes in his 30 years of police service before retiring in 2016. The court said, "He accepted the illegal gratification inside a police station during duty hours and while in official uniform." The four-year sentence will run with the others concurrently. Mohanan has already served one week in custody, which will count towards his sentence.
