NIA Launches Probe into Beldanga Violence After Migrant Worker Death in West Bengal
January 31, 2026
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) started its probe into the violence in Beldanga, Murshidabad, West Bengal on January 31, 2026. The violence followed news of a migrant worker's death in Jharkhand earlier this month. The NIA team reached the Beldanga police station in the morning, spoke to officials, and collected documents. Following orders from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the NIA has registered a new case. An official said, “The focus of the investigation is to determine whether the violence was the result of any organised conspiracy, the spread of fake or misleading information, or deliberate provocation to stoke communal passion.” Tension rose on January 16 after news broke of the unnatural death of a migrant worker in Jharkhand. The situation stayed tense for two days after news of another attack on a migrant worker from the area in Bihar. Unrest spread, and protesters blocked National Highway-12 and railway tracks at Beldanga, disrupting transport. Given this, the Central government handed the case to the NIA. A special NIA court ordered the West Bengal Police to quickly hand over all documents and details of the probe. Earlier, state police arrested 35 people linked to the violence.
